Joffre Lakes Park Campground

Nestled in the heart of British Columbia, Joffre Lakes Park is a stunning refuge offering campers the chance to immerse themselves in nature’s grandeur. Known for its breathtaking glacier-fed lakes—Lower, Middle, and Upper Joffre—this park features a variety of activities, majestic views, and a well-maintained backcountry camping experience, making it a perfect getaway for outdoor enthusiasts.

Park Overview

Established in 1988 and designated as a Class A park in 1996, Joffre Lakes Park boasts rugged mountains, icy streams, and lush forests. The vibrant turquoise waters, rich in ‘rockflour’ or glacial silt, make this park a visual masterpiece that frequently attracts hikers and nature lovers alike.

Camping Facilities

The campground operates from June 13 to November 11, and features 26 designated backcountry tent pads at Upper Joffre Lake. These sites are intended for small backcountry tents and are equipped with:

  • One urine diversion toilet
  • Bear-proof food storage unit
  • Stunning views of the surrounding wilderness

Campers are reminded that campfires are prohibited to preserve the natural habitat. Additionally, bringing your own drinking water is essential, as potable water is not available in the park. It is advised to boil water from lakes or streams for at least two minutes before consumption.

Access and Reservations

Parking is available at the designated lot only, as roadside parking on Highway 99 is not permitted. The hike from the parking lot to Upper Joffre Lake spans approximately 5.5 kilometers and is considered moderate-to-challenging, with about 400 meters of elevation gain. For reservations, a fee of $5 per person over 6 years is charged, while children under 6 can enter free of charge. Be sure to secure a reservation, as this park experiences high traffic, especially on weekends.

Sustainability and Wildlife

Joffre Lakes Park is dedicated to conservation and responsible recreation. All visitors are encouraged to follow Leave No Trace outdoor ethics, which includes packing out all trash, as there are no garbage cans in the park. Wildlife is abundant here, encompassing species such as:

  • Deer
  • Black bears
  • Grizzly bears
  • Mountain goats
  • Pikas

It is essential to store food properly to prevent attracting bears, using the provided bear-proof storage methods at the campground.

Safety and Preparedness

Visitors should be aware that no emergency services are available nearby, requiring self-sufficiency and preparedness for self-rescue. Winter conditions prevail from November until late May, and camping during this season is closed due to heightened avalanche risks. Proper gear, including micro spikes or snowshoes, is recommended when traversing winter trails.

Things to Do

Aside from camping, Joffre Lakes Park offers a variety of activities including:

  • Hiking through old-growth forests and breathtaking mountain landscapes
  • Wildlife viewing opportunities
  • Fishing (with a valid permit)
  • Photography of stunning vistas

However, swimming is not advised due to the cold temperatures of the glacial lakes.

Plan Your Visit

Before heading out, check the current trail conditions and familiarize yourself with the park’s trail map. It’s essential to be well-prepared for weather changes and rugged terrain, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience. Whether you are an experienced hiker or simply looking to connect with the natural beauty of Canada, Joffre Lakes Park offers a unique adventure that captures the essence of wilderness camping.
