Salmon Lake Cabin Sitka

Situated on the east shore of the picturesque Salmon Lake on Baranof Island, Salmon Lake Cabin offers an exceptional escape for outdoor enthusiasts. Located approximately 11 miles southeast of Sitka, Alaska, this cabin embodies the spirit of adventure in the stunning surroundings of the Tongass National Forest.

Cabin Overview

The cabin, built in 1998 by volunteers from the U.S. Coast Guard, features a 15’x17′ wood Pan Abode-style structure accommodating up to six people. The indoor amenities include:

  • Two double and two single plywood bunks
  • A wood stove for heating
  • A table with benches
  • A cooking counter and cupboard
  • An outhouse toilet

Please note that the cabin does not come with mattresses or cooking utensils, so visitors should bring their own sleeping bags, cooking supplies, and personal gear.

Access and Accessibility

Salmon Lake Cabin is generally accessible year-round via two primary methods:

  • Boat Access: A 10-mile trip from Sitka to Silver Bay, followed by a 2-mile hike on the Salmon Lake-Redoubt Lake Trail.
  • Float Plane: A quick 10-minute journey offers a scenic aerial view of the beautiful landscapes.

It is essential to plan your trip carefully, especially between mid-November and early April when access may be hindered due to frozen lake conditions and cabin maintenance is not provided during winter months.

Natural Features

Surrounded by striking spruce and hemlock-forested mountains rising to 2500 feet, Salmon Lake itself stretches approximately 3/4-mile long and 1/4-mile wide. The area is a haven for wildlife, including the occasional brown bear.

Recreational Opportunities

Visitors can indulge in a variety of activities, such as:

  • Fishing: The lake is home to cutthroat trout and Dolly Varden, while the outlet stream boasts runs of pink and sockeye salmon in summer and coho salmon in the fall.
  • Hiking: Explore the scenic Salmon Lake-Redoubt Lake Trail which leads from the cabin to Silver Bay.
  • Seasonal Deer Hunting: Abide by local regulations for hunting opportunities in the surrounding forest.

Essential Information and Recommendations

Due to the remote nature of the cabin’s location, it is crucial to be mindful of safety precautions:

  • Water: Lake water must be treated before drinking.
  • Food and Waste: Visitors are required to pack out all garbage and leftover food.
  • Firewood: Can be scarce; it’s advised to bring firewood with you and prevent the spread of tree-killing pests by buying it near your destination.
  • Weather: Rain gear is strongly recommended as weather conditions can change quickly in Alaska.

Lastly, remember to be aware of your surroundings and prepared for unexpected circumstances such as poor weather. Enjoy your stay at the beautiful Salmon Lake Cabin and experience the serenity of Alaska’s wilderness!
