Located 30 miles northwest of Sitka, this cabin serves as an ideal base for those seeking adventure and wilderness solitude from late April through mid-November.
Accommodations
The cabin itself is a cozy 12 by 14-ft Pan abode-style structure, designed to accommodate up to six guests. It features:
- Two double bunks and two single bunks for comfortable sleeping arrangements.
- A wood stove for heating, ensuring a cozy atmosphere even on cooler evenings.
- A designated cooking counter and cupboard for food prep and storage.
- A table with benches, perfect for meals and games.
- An outhouse toilet located conveniently close to the cabin.
Visitors should be aware that the cabin does not include mattresses or cooking utensils. Therefore, it is essential to bring along sleeping bags, cooking stoves, pots, pans, dishes, and utensils to fully enjoy your stay.
Natural Features
Surrounded by dense forests of cedar, spruce, and hemlock, Suloia Lake is a pristine body of water that stretches approximately 2 miles long and ½ mile wide. Its elevation at 225 feet is contrasted by forested mountain ridges that soar to 2,600 feet, creating a breathtaking backdrop for any outdoor enthusiast.
Wildlife abounds in this region, with brown bears often seen in the area, adding an element of adventure for those exploring the wilderness. Fishing enthusiasts will find an opportunity to catch rainbow trout and Dolly Varden, although patience is required, as fishing can be slow.
Recreational Opportunities
The area offers limited hiking trails, including the Suloia Trail that leads to an old cabin site, though bushwacking along the shoreline can be challenging due to brushy terrain. The nearby lake offers opportunities for kayaking and canoeing, although a small rowboat is provided with the cabin. A long-shaft 2-10 hp outboard motor can enhance boat use, but must be rented separately.
For those wishing to hunt, deer hunting is also a possibility in the region (permits and regulations apply).
Important Information
- Accessibility: The cabin is typically accessible from late April to mid-November. Be aware that it can be inaccessible from mid-November through late April due to a frozen lake surface, making floatplane access impossible.
- Water Safety: Visitors can obtain water from the lake or a nearby inlet stream, but it must be treated before consumption. It is advisable to bring ample supplies of drinking water.
- Remoteness: This secluded cabin is located in a designated wilderness area and can only be accessed by floatplane. Approximately a 20-minute flight from Sitka, it provides a true escape into nature.
- Essential Items: Guests should pack essential gear, including sleeping bags, a cooking stove, food supplies, toilet paper, a fire extinguisher, and personal flotation devices (PFDs).
In preparing for your visit, please note that re-creating in Alaska can come with inherent challenges, including unpredictable weather. It is crucial to stay informed on local conditions and be prepared for potential extended stays due to weather-related delays.
Historical Significance
The current cabin was built and donated by the Eurich family in memory of their son, replacing an older structure on the east shore. This adds a personal touch and historical significance to your retreat, connecting visitors with the legacy of wilderness conservation.
Visit Suloia Lake Cabin for an unforgettable experience in one of Alaska’s most pristine wilderness areas, where adventure and tranquility await.
