Nestled in the picturesque Coronado National Forest of southeastern Arizona, Upper Arcadia Campground offers a rejuvenating escape from the heat of the desert. At an elevation of 6,700 feet, this campground is surrounded by a stunning forest of tall ponderosa pines, Gambel oaks, and Arizona walnuts, creating a serene environment perfect for camping, hiking, and birdwatching.

Location and Accessibility

Located along the Swift Trail Scenic Drive, Upper Arcadia Campground provides easy access to diverse habitats and breathtaking views. Visitors can reach the campground via:

  • From Safford: Take State Route 191 south for 6 miles, turn right onto State Route 366/Swift Trail, and continue 11.5 miles to the campsite entrance.
  • From Tucson: Follow I-10 East for 90 miles, exit at State Route 191, head toward Safford, drive 26.3 miles north, then turn left on State Route 366/Swift Trail to reach the entrance.

Camping Facilities

Upper Arcadia Campground features various amenities designed for both individual and group camping experiences:

  • Group Camping Area: Capable of accommodating up to 75 people.
  • Seasonal Drinking Water: Availability is dependent on weather conditions.
  • Vault Toilets: Clean and accessible facilities available.
  • Picnic Tables: Each campsite is equipped with picnic tables for outdoor dining.
  • Campfire Rings with Grills: Perfect for cooking and gathering around the fire.
  • Bear-Proof Food Lockers: To ensure food safety from wildlife.
  • Trash Cans: Convenient disposal of waste with a focus on maintaining a clean environment.

Note that no hookups are available, and a fee of $5 per vehicle applies upon arrival.

  • Hiking: The nearby Arcadia Trail #328 begins at the campground and leads to beautiful mountain views, including a spur to Heliograph Peak.

Guidelines and Safety

To maintain a safe and enjoyable experience:

  • All food must be securely stored to avoid attracting wildlife.
  • Fires must be attended at all times and completely extinguished before leaving.
  • Only dead-and-downed trees and shrubs may be collected as firewood; cutting trees is prohibited.
  • Maximum vehicle length is 40 feet, and trailers are recommended to be less than 22 feet due to narrow switchbacks.
  • All garbage must be disposed of properly; if it doesn’t fit in trash bins, please pack it out.
