Nestled in the stunning Tararua Forest Park of New Zealand’s Wairarapa region, the Waiohine Camping area offers an unforgettable outdoor experience for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. Located just 18 km northwest of Greytown, this secluded site boasts breathtaking gorges and abundant opportunities for swimming, picnicking, and outdoor exploration.

Camping Fees

• Adults (18+ years): $10 per night
• Children (5-17 years): $5 per night
• Infants (0-4 years): Free

Payment can be made with a DOC Campsite Pass, which is preferred, or via cash at the self-registration stand. If a camp warden is present, fees can also be paid directly to them. Make sure to put the correct fee in the provided envelope and display the receipt on your vehicle or tent.

Amenities and Features

• Tent Sites: 50 non-powered/tent sites available on a first come, first served basis.
• Scenic Water Activities: The clear waters of the Waiohine River feature deep pools that are perfect for swimming and have rocks that are ideal for jumping off.
• Unique Tracks: Access to stunning walking tracks that lead to picturesque areas along the river, with some routes leading to secret beaches.
• Fire Regulations: Fires are allowed in designated fireplaces, provided there is no fire ban in effect. Make sure to check current rules before lighting a fire.

• Walking and Tramping: Several tracks provide access to spectacular views and varying levels of difficulty. Longer walks begin at the swing bridge located near the campsite.

• Parks and Picnicking: Designated picnic areas are available for those looking to enjoy a day outdoors in a scenic environment.

Unique Aspects

One standout feature of Waiohine Camping is the swing bridge that provides access to further trails and offers breathtaking views of the gorge below. However, guests should be mindful that the bridge surface may not be suitable for some dogs, and sandflies can be quite prevalent near the river.

Getting There

The access road, Waiohine Gorge Road, is gravel and may have rough and narrow sections, including two forded stream crossings. Visitors are advised to drive carefully to fully enjoy the scenic journey towards this camping haven.

Environmental Conservation

As the campsite is situated on conservation land, dogs are permitted on a leash, and all visitors are encouraged to respect the natural environment to ensure its preservation for future generations.
