Location and Accessibility

Located at an elevation of 5,220 feet, the cabin stands on the watershed divide between the Lochsa and Clearwater Rivers, boasting panoramic views of the western slopes of the majestic Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness and the rugged peaks of the Selway Crags. Access to the cabin is exclusive in the winter months, requiring guests to travel approximately 17 miles by snowmobile, skis, or snowshoes after parking at a designated area on the nearby Woodland Road.

Accommodations and Amenities

The Walde Lookout Cabin is a rustic 14×16-ft. log structure which accommodates up to four people. Inside, guests will find:

  • Two mattresses located in a loft area
  • Two cots for additional sleeping space
  • A wood stove for warmth
  • A table and four chairs
  • A propane cook stove for meal preparation
  • Basic cooking and eating utensils
  • Propane lights to illuminate the space
  • A smoke alarm and fire extinguisher for safety

Please note that there is no electricity or running water inside the cabin. Guests are advised to bring their own drinking water, as there are no potable water sources available. Natural water sources may be present, but should be boiled for culinary use.

Recreation and Natural Features

The surrounding area boasts a plethora of recreational opportunities, with several trails perfect for snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing. Nearby, you’ll find excellent sledding spots, making it a family-friendly destination. The rich wildlife includes mule and white-tailed deer, elk, moose, gray wolves, and cougars, along with a variety of bird species that inhabit the forests.

The cabin’s location in a dense evergreen forest ensures a serene ambiance, perfect for those looking to escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Important Considerations

Before heading to Walde Lookout Cabin, keep in mind the following:

  • The route to the cabin may not be groomed; checking with the Lochsa Ranger District for current road conditions is strongly recommended.
  • Prepare for a broad range of weather and snow conditions, and pack accordingly.
  • Ensure you bring bedding, flashlights, extra batteries, matches, first-aid supplies, and toilet paper, as these are not provided.
  • Guests will need to shovel a path to the cabin, as well as keep the area around the propane tank clear of snow.
  • Toilet facilities consist of a pit toilet outhouse, and guests should pack out all trash.
  • Firewood is available in a shed outside; remember not to use candles inside the cabin.

Historical Note

The Walde Lookout Cabin was originally built in 1941 to accommodate employees working in the adjacent fire lookout, which has been operational since 1939. The cabin, now meticulously restored to retain its original charm, is available for rent seasonally from mid-December through late March.
