Nestled at the mouth of the magnificent Kōhaihai River in New Zealand’s Kahurangi National Park, Kōhaihai Campsite is a prime destination for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. Accommodation

The campsite features a total of 50 non-powered tent sites, available on a first-come, first-served basis. Whether you’re traveling as a solo backpacker or with family, the Kōhaihai Campsite accommodates guests of all ages:

  • Adults (18+ years): $10 per night
  • Children (5-17 years): $5 per night
  • Infants (0-4 years): Free

Note that there is a maximum consecutive stay of two nights.

  • Fires: Not permitted at any time – please review the fire safety regulations.
  • Flooding: Be aware that the low-lying grass area next to the river may be prone to flooding.
  • Sandflies: These pesky insects can be present, especially in summer; it’s advisable to bring insect repellent.
  • Swimming: Caution is advised when swimming at the river mouth due to extreme tidal currents and rips.

The Kōhaihai Campsite is more than just a resting spot; it’s a gateway to adventure! Here are some activities you can enjoy:

  • Walking and Tramping: Access short day walks and overnight hikes directly from the campsite, including parts of the renowned Heaphy Track.

To secure a spot at Kōhaihai Campsite, online bookings are required, especially during the busy season. A $10 service fee applies to phone and in-person bookings. Please be aware that bookings are open for stays up to June 30, 2025. If you do not book in advance, a site may not be available on arrival, and a service charge may apply for last-minute reservations. Ensure that you confirm your reservation to enjoy this beautiful destination!

Location Access

Kōhaihai Campsite is located at the end of Council Road, just north of Karamea. The approach includes a 3 km stretch of gravel road, so be prepared for a bit of a rough ride before reaching this tranquil paradise.
