Available Campsites

Lake Vesuvius offers diverse camping options, catering to both families and larger groups:

• Group Tent Camping: Site 001, Loop 2 can accommodate tent sites for groups seeking a rustic experience.
• Group Shelter: Sites 003 and 004 provide covered picnic areas; one has electric access, while the other operates without it, making them excellent for events.

Camp, RV, and Explore Outdoors

Camping at Lake Vesuvius is a delightful experience, equipped with facilities that ensure comfort and convenience:

• Both family and group campgrounds are available with accessible flush toilets and drinking water.
• Picnic tables and campfire rings with grills make outdoor cooking and evening campfires a must.
• The group shelters can accommodate up to 150 people for group activities and events.

The natural beauty of Lake Vesuvius is undeniable, framed by rugged hills and rock outcroppings. The area surrounding the lake was originally developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1939, specifically aimed at creating recreational spaces for all to enjoy. Visitors are welcomed with:

• A serene 1/3-mile accessible boardwalk along the lake’s edge, perfect for leisurely exploration.
• The Longbow Archery Trail, spanning 1/2-mile, includes at least 25 field targets for those interested in archery.
• Over 25 miles of hiking trails and more than 45 miles of horseback riding trails, catering to various skill levels.

Need to Know

• Camping is limited to a maximum of 14 days within any 30-day period.
• Reservations must be made at least 4 days in advance of your arrival; first-come, first-serve sites are available within the reservation window.
• To protect the local environment, please do not bring firewood from outside locations. Firewood must be acquired near your camping destination.
• Pets are allowed in designated areas but must be on a leash.

To reach Lake Vesuvius, take U.S. Highway 52 at Ironton, then travel State Route 93 north for less than 10 miles, followed by a left on Lake Vesuvius Road (County Road 29) which leads to the recreation area.
