Located in the stunning Tongass National Forest in Alaska, the Starrigavan Creek Cabin offers a unique opportunity for outdoor enthusiasts to immerse themselves in nature. This cabin is a drive-up, seasonally accessible log cabin constructed in 2008, marking it as the first young-growth cabin in the recreation area. Built from young Sitka spruce trees, the cabin has been designed to improve local wildlife and fish habitats, providing an eco-friendly retreat for its visitors.

Natural Features

Surrounded by a temperate rainforest of hemlock and spruce trees, the area boasts a diverse range of forest, estuary, and marine habitats. Depending on the season, visitors may spot:

  • Brown bears
  • Spawning coho and pink salmon
  • Common merganser
  • Bald eagles
  • Great blue herons
  • Buffleheads
  • Kingfishers
  • River otters
  • Sitka black-tailed deer

Cabin Amenities

The cabin is designed to accommodate up to eight people, with beds for up to six adults. Amenities include:

  • One single bunk over an accessible bunk
  • Two double-size bunks in the sleeping loft
  • A table with benches
  • A wood stove for heat
  • A cooking counter

Outside, a picnic table and a combination campfire ring/grill with log benches provide the perfect spot for gatherings. Guests will also have access to a vault toilet located 200 feet from the cabin, with artesian well water situated 300 feet away.

Access & Accessibility

Access to the cabin is easy via the Alaska Marine Highway or Alaska Airlines. It’s conveniently located just 3/4 mile from the local Alaska Marine Highway Sitka Ferry Terminal and a short drive from downtown Sitka. The cabin can be reached directly by car, with parking available for up to four standard vehicles at the designated parking spur.

Do note that this is a locked cabin requiring visitors to pre-arrange access, and specific check-in procedures must be followed. Earliest check-in is at 2 p.m. on the day of the reservation, with a latest departure time of 12 p.m. the following day. Reservations can accommodate a maximum of eight individuals at any given time, including visitors not spending the night.

Important Considerations

As a nature retreat, it is crucial for visitors to be aware of the surrounding wildlife, particularly the active brown bear population in the area. Guests should ensure that all food and drinks are kept in the cabin or stored securely in vehicles at night. Additional regulations include:

  • Dogs must be leashed and cannot be left alone or tied outside
  • Firewood is not included; visitors should bring their own or request it during arrangement
  • No tents, RVs, or trailers are permitted at this site
