Welcome to South Ruby Campground, a stunning outdoor retreat located at the base of the magnificent Ruby Mountains in Ruby Valley, Nevada. Nestled at an elevation of 6,000 feet, this campground offers an ideal blend of adventure and serenity, making it perfect for both families and nature enthusiasts.
Natural Features
The campground is surrounded by a forest of pinyon pine and juniper trees, providing a sense of privacy and a connection to nature. You’ll enjoy views of Ruby Lake, known for its rich biodiversity. This area is a critical habitat for over 220 species of birds, including canvasback ducks and greater sandhill cranes, making it a birdwatcher’s paradise. Additionally, the Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge, located just two miles north of the campground, is an excellent spot for fishing and hiking.
Available Campsites
South Ruby Campground boasts a total of 33 single sites, one double site, and one accessible site. Each site is equipped with:
- Picnic tables
- Campfire rings
There are options for both RV and tent camping, allowing you to experience the outdoors in your preferred style.

During the main summer season, which typically runs from early May to late September, the campground provides:
- Vault toilets
- Drinking water
- Garbage service
Please note that during the off-season, camping is first-come, first-served, with reduced fees and no water available.

Getting There
Reaching South Ruby Campground is straightforward. Take Interstate 80 to Highway 93, exiting at Wells. Continue south for approximately 30 miles to State Route 229, then follow it for 15 miles. Make your way south on State Route 767 and County Road 788 for another 30 miles until you arrive at the campground.
Important Information
To ensure a smooth camping experience, please keep in mind the following:
- A fee of $6 will be charged for extra vehicles at the campground.
- Reservations are held until check-out time on the day after your scheduled arrival; unoccupied reservations become available for first-come, first-served guests.
- No-show reservations will not be refunded.
South Ruby Campground is not only a gateway to the beauty of the Ruby Mountains but also a great base for exploring the local history, including the nearby Pony Express Trail and historic Fort Ruby.
