Perched high above the scenic Metolius River, the Green Ridge Lookout Tower offers a unique camping experience in the heart of Deschutes National Forest. This 20-foot tall fire lookout, built in the 1960s, provides breathtaking views of Mt. Jefferson and its surrounding natural beauty, making it an ideal destination for adventurers and nature lovers alike.

Overview and Accessibility

Green Ridge Lookout is accessible primarily from early May to June, and mid-September to mid-November. During the peak summer season, Forest Service volunteers are on-site to assist with forest fire monitoring. However, due to its remote location, visitors should be prepared for minimal cell phone service and ensure they are adequately equipped for their stay.

The approach requires a specific combination to access the lookout, which can be obtained by contacting the Sisters Ranger District in advance.

Campsite Features

The lookout can accommodate a maximum of four guests, featuring:

A single futon for sleeping
A table and two chairs for dining or relaxation
A propane refrigerator for food storage
An overhead light and a propane wall heater to keep the space warm
A four-burner propane stove and oven for cooking

Please note that there is no kitchenware provided; visitors must bring their own pots, pans, utensils, and other essentials. Additionally, the site is non-smoking, and outdoor pets are welcome.

The lookout provides an unparalleled vantage point for viewing the stunning mountain landscape, including the snow-capped peaks of Mount Jefferson, the second-highest mountain in Oregon.
