Nestled within the stunning Yoho National Park in Columbia-Shuswap, British Columbia, the Lake O’Hara Campground is an idyllic destination for nature enthusiasts and backpackers seeking tranquility and breathtaking scenery. The campground will be open from June 20 to October 5, 2025, offering a perfect summer getaway amidst the Canadian Rockies.
Camping Experience
The campground features 30 reserved campsites specifically designed for overnight guests. Reservations are mandatory and must be made in advance to secure a spot in this popular wilderness area. Each campsite is equipped with:
- Tent pads sized at 2.5 m x 2.5 m, suitable for small backpacking tents
- One fire pit for warmth and cooking
- Outhouses for sanitation purposes
- One medium-sized storage locker (60 cm deep, 50 cm high, 60 cm wide) per site, allowing for the secure storage of gear
- Access to treated well water, though availability can be inconsistent early or late in the season
- Two cooking shelters for food preparation
- Firewood and a splitting maul for campfires
Access and Transportation
To preserve the natural environment, all camping and day-use reservations are required for access to Lake O’Hara. The campground can be reached via an 11 km shuttle bus service that runs regularly from the parking area, with departures scheduled during the season:
- Ingoing: 8:30 AM, 10:30 AM
- Outgoing: 9:30 AM, 11:30 AM, 2:30 PM, 4:30 PM, 6:30 PM
Alternatively, adventurous visitors can tackle the approximately 22 km round trip hiking trail to Lake O’Hara, but are advised to come prepared with sufficient food, water, bear spray, and appropriate hiking gear.
Wildlife and Safety
As a part of a bear-savvy camping experience, guests are reminded to follow stringent food and garbage storage guidelines. Proper procedures for cooking and storing food must be adhered to, ensuring a safe environment for both campers and wildlife.
Pets are not allowed in the campground or on the bus; however, they may be walked on leashes along the road leading to Lake O’Hara.
Reservation Information
All reservations for the Lake O’Hara Campground must be made in advance, with a maximum of three consecutive nights permitted per booking. Reservations for the 2025 season can begin on January 23, 2025, at 8:00 AM MT, and must prioritize families, with a limit of 6 individuals per reservation. Note that children aged 1-16 must be included in the booking count.
