Located in the breathtaking Pisgah National Forest, Carolina Hemlocks Recreation Area is a nature lover’s paradise situated at an elevation of 2,900 feet. Enveloped by a majestic hemlock forest, this campground offers the perfect blend of tranquility and adventure, making it an ideal getaway for small to medium-sized groups looking to explore the great outdoors.

Available Campsites

The campground features 35 primitive campsites, each equipped with:

• Picnic tables
• Tent pads
• Lantern posts
• Campfire rings with grills

All sites are first-come, first-served, allowing campers the flexibility to choose their perfect spot amidst nature’s serene backdrop.

Recreation and Activities

The recreation area offers a wide array of activities for outdoor enthusiasts:

• Swimming and tubing in the nearby South Toe River
• Fishing for trout and smallmouth bass
• Hiking on picturesque trails, including a leisurely 1-mile trail and a more challenging 3.8-mile trail
• Picnicking in shaded areas or at the spacious picnic shelter

Visitors can also enjoy scenic drives along the iconic Blue Ridge Parkway or hike at nearby Mount Mitchell State Park.

Important Information

Campground hours are from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., and it is important to notify the campground of any late arrivals. Please note that cell service can be limited in the area, but texting may be possible.

Due to its location within a bear sanctuary, campers are strongly advised to:

• Keep food out of sight in secure containers or locked inside hard-sided vehicles
• Properly dispose of trash in provided bins
• Remove all food from the area after eating

Access and Directions

Getting to Carolina Hemlocks is easy. From Asheville, North Carolina, take I-26 west to exit 9, then go onto 19 east toward Burnsville. Follow 19 to Micaville, then turn right onto Highway 80. Continue south for approximately 8 miles to reach the recreation area.
