The cabin, acquired by Ranger Ross in 2011, embodies the essence of a true wilderness escape. While living here as a resource protection ranger, Ranger Ross developed a deep appreciation for the land, and now invites backcountry enthusiasts to share in this experience by renting the cabin.

Cabin Accessibility

Please note that the cabin is not easily accessible by standard vehicles. The journey to the cabin requires high-clearance, 4-wheel drive vehicles due to its location at the end of an unimproved dirt road. Visitors without such vehicles can hike to the cabin through designated park trails.

Due to seasonal weather changes, the road can become impassible during winter snows and summer rains, so guests must be prepared for varying conditions.

Hiking Trails & Connections

The Painted Desert Ranger Cabin serves as an ideal base for exploring the natural beauty of Petrified Forest National Park. Here are some popular hiking routes you can embark on:

• Very Easy Hike: Approx. 1.5 miles round trip close to the cabin.
• Moderately Easy Hike: Kachina Point involves a steep 500-foot climb with a total distance of 8 miles round trip.
• Devil’s Playground: A beautiful, eroded area, reachable by heading northwest from the cabin.
• Onyx Bridge: Follow the Lithodendron Wash upstream to encounter this natural feature.
• Pilot Rock: The highest point in the park, accessible via a challenging route through Wildhorse Wash.

Rates & Reservations

The rental rate for the Painted Desert Ranger Cabin is $40.00 per night, with weekly and monthly options available as well. There are no additional cleaning fees, as guests are asked to leave the cabin tidy for future visitors.

Please note that reservations must be prepaid, and cancellations can be made up to 72 hours before your stay minus a small transaction fee.
