The cabin showcases the typical design of the era, recognizing the C-46 one-room cabin plan designed by William Fox. This architectural style is characterized by its ventral saddle notches and rustic log craftsmanship, symbolizing the traditional Forest Service log architecture of the 1930s and 40s. Adjacent to the cabin is a historic fire lookout tower, an example of the region’s rich history.
Natural Features
Surrounded by breathtaking landscapes, Strawberry Cabin lies at an elevation of 6,100 feet atop Strawberry Butte. This area is part of the rugged Elkhorn Mountains, home to diverse wildlife and rich habitats, designated as a Wildlife Management Unit in 1986. The terrain offers a mix of prairie to alpine ecosystems, showcasing an impressive array of flora and fauna, from mayflies to mountain goats.
Fire plays a significant role in shaping the landscape; a major forest fire in 1988 burned almost 50,000 acres in the region, stimulating the growth of new lodgepole pine forests, adding to the area’s natural beauty.
