Camp John Schultz — Yellow River State Forest

Yellow River State Forest is in northeast Iowa in Allamakee County, at 729 State Forest Road in Harpers Ferry, IA. The forest headquarters and recreation facilities are about 4 miles southeast of Waterville or 3 miles west of Harpers Ferry.

The forest offers camping, equestrian riding, hiking, mountain biking, fishing, hunting, kayaking, and winter activities such as cross-country skiing and snowmobiling.

Camping is available in four areas in the Paint Creek Unit: Little Paint, Big Paint, Creekside equestrian campground, and Frontier equestrian campground. The sites are non-modern and use vault toilets, with drinking water available near the office complex.

Yes. Five backpacking areas along the backpacking trail are available first come, first served. Each area has four individual sites and no restroom facilities, so campers must carry out what they bring in.
