Harris Park is a beautifully developed recreational area located on the scenic South Fork of the Walla Walla River, approximately 14 miles southeast of Milton-Freewater, Oregon. Operated by Umatilla County, this park is open from early spring to late fall, making it an ideal destination for outdoor enthusiasts seeking tranquility and adventure. Harris Park features numerous amenities, including a day use area perfect for picnicking, hiking, and relaxing in nature.
This campground is rich in history, initially developed in the 1920s by the Rotary Club of Walla Walla for a Boy Scout camp. Its transformation into a recreational haven symbolizes community cooperation, with contributions from local citizens and organizations. The park now provides a beautiful environment for family gatherings, group events, and individual camping experiences.
Amenities and Facilities
- Campsites: 38 well-appointed campsites with water, electricity, picnic tables, and fire/grill rings. Two sites are wheelchair accessible, and many sites can accommodate larger RVs.
- Cabins: Cozy cabins are available for rent, perfect for those who prefer a sheltered experience. Please note that cooking and food are not permitted inside the cabins.
- Public Facilities: Men’s and women’s restrooms that meet ADA requirements, along with a designated pay phone, ensure accessibility for all visitors.
- Day Use Area: This area is free for picnicking and offers beautiful shaded spots alongside the river with tables and raised grills for barbecuing.
- Large Shelter: A large, covered shelter equipped with electricity, lights, water, a refrigerator, and a gas barbecue. It is available for rent for family reunions, weddings, and other gatherings.
- Recreational Facilities: Enjoy an extensive playground, volleyball court, horseshoe pits, and ample shaded areas for relaxation and enjoyment.
Camping Fees
- RV Sites: $30 per night for sites equipped with 30 amp service.
- Cabins: $40 per night for cozy cabin accommodations.
- Shelter Rentals: Large shelter for $75 per day (max 50 people), small shelter for $30 per day (max 30 people).
Note: Camping is limited to a maximum of 14 consecutive days, and check-in begins daily at 1 PM with check-out by 11 AM.
Hiking and Outdoor Recreation
For adventure seekers, Harris Park features rugged hiking trails that offer an exhilarating experience surrounded by nature. The trail, located on the park’s south side, is recommended for experienced hikers and provides stunning views of the valley. Parents are advised to accompany children, as portions of the trail can be narrow and primitive.
Park Policies
- Campfires are only permitted in established fire rings/fireplaces.
- Pets must be kept on a leash within the campground and day use area; however, no pets are allowed in cabins.
- No cooking or electrical appliances in cabins are permitted, and there is a fee for firewood.
- Visitors are encouraged to clean up after themselves and respect park regulations to maintain the park’s natural beauty.
