About the Campground

The Juniper Campground is situated approximately four miles (6.4 km) from the entrance to the park’s North Unit, making it easily accessible for visitors. The campground features a group site designed to accommodate between seven and 60 people, offering a fantastic opportunity for family reunions, group outings, or educational trips. Up to 20 passenger vehicles can be parked on-site, although there are no hookups available; a nearby dump station is provided for convenience.

Natural Features

This campground boasts a moderately forested area, with cottonwood trees that turn a striking golden hue in the fall. Sites receive partial to full sun, allowing visitors to enjoy the warm summer temperatures, which can be countered by refreshing dips in the cold waters of the Little Missouri River.

Visitors to Juniper Campground can access two significant trails directly from the campsite:

Achenbach Trail: A stunning 17.7-mile (28.5 km) trail that climbs through the Achenbach Hills, providing breathtaking views and connecting to the Oxbow Overlook.
Little Mo Trail: A shorter, self-guiding nature trail of 1.1 miles (1.8 km) that meanders through river woodlands and badlands.

Campfires are permitted, and gathering dead and downed firewood is allowed. However, during the hot and dry summer months, fire restrictions may be enforced, prohibiting campfires and charcoal fires. It is crucial to not move firewood from other locations to prevent the spread of invasive pests; it is advisable to obtain firewood near your campsite.

Rules and Reservation Policies

The campground follows specific guidelines to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all visitors:

Check-in/Check-out: Check-in and check-out times are at 12:00 noon.
Generators: Allowed during designated hours from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. with effective mufflers.
Maximum Stay: Campers may stay a maximum of 14 nights from May 1 to September 30 and up to 30 days total in a calendar year.
