Located in the Town of New Berlin, Chenango County, Hunts Pond State Forest offers a serene camping experience surrounded by diverse landscapes. Camping Information
Camping at Hunts Pond is available year-round, but it is important to note that from May 1 to September 30, camping is restricted to designated campsites and requires a free permit obtained from the DEC Sherburne office. There are 13 designated campsites located around the perimeter of Hunts Pond, each equipped with a fire pit. However, campers should be prepared as there is no potable water source on-site.

One of the unique aspects of Hunts Pond State Forest is the young softwood plantations established in the late 1960s, which offer a glimpse into the adaptability of different tree species including European larch, red pine, and Norway spruce. The views from the large open field on the western side provide a stunning panorama of the Unadilla River valley and are perfect for photography or relaxation. A beaver meadow located in the south-central area is an excellent spot to observe local wildlife.
Getting There
Accessing Hunts Pond State Forest is straightforward:
- From the North: Travel south on NY State Route 8 through New Berlin.
- Continue on Route 8 for 4.1 miles and turn right onto Buttermilk Falls Road.
- The forest begins less than one mile up; turn right onto Hunts Pond Road to reach the northern end.
