Located in the scenic wilderness of Island Park, Idaho, Mccrea Bridge Campground offers a perfect blend of natural beauty and outdoor adventure. Set at an elevation of 6,200 feet, this campground is nestled beside the picturesque Island Park Reservoir and is part of the stunning Caribou-Targhee National Forest.
Available Campsites
Mccrea Bridge Campground provides various camping options with both single and double sites available. Each campsite is equipped with:
- Picnic table
- Campfire ring
- Grill
While some sites have stairs between the parking area and the site, all are designed to enhance your outdoor experience. The camp operates on a first-come, first-served basis.
Camp, RV, and Explore Outdoors
Accessed by a paved road, with interior gravel roads for parking, the campground is suitable for both camping and RVs. Emotional wildlife encounters are plentiful here, with sightings of animals such as moose, elk, and bald eagles.
Natural Features
The campground is surrounded by dense forests of lodgepole pine, which provides partial shade to some sites while others bask in sunlight. The area’s unique geology comes from extinct volcanic activity, featuring the Henry’s Fork Caldera and the larger Island Park Caldera.
Wildflowers bloom in vibrant colors throughout summer, enriching the already breathtaking landscape.

Visitors can explore nearby attractions, including:
- Harriman State Park: Just 14 miles south, this park offers exceptional fishing and over 20 miles of hiking trails.
- Henry’s Lake State Park: Located 16 miles north, it provides additional fishing opportunities and a boat ramp.
- Mesa Falls Scenic Byway: A scenic 28-mile drive featuring breathtaking overlooks and trails to the stunning Upper and Lower Mesa Falls.
- Big Springs National Recreation Water Trail: Enjoy a scenic float or canoe trip with opportunities to spot wildlife.
Recreation
Fishing is a major draw to Mccrea Bridge, with the Henry’s Fork being recognized as one of the best fly-fishing streams in the United States. Anglers can expect to catch rainbow, cutthroat, and brook trout, as well as Kokanee salmon. Other popular recreational activities include:

Note that there is no ATV or horse access within the campground.
Need to Know
Campers should be aware of the following:
- A fee of $7 is collected for each additional vehicle.
- No access to the reservoir is available in August due to low water levels.
- Firewood is available for purchase on-site, and it is advised to source firewood local to help prevent the spread of pests.
All sites have access to vault toilets, drinking water, and an area for trash collection, but please note that electricity is not available in the campground.
