Located at a breathtaking elevation of 6,380 feet (1,945 meters), the Paliku Backcountry Campsite offers adventurers an extraordinary camping experience on the eastern end of the wilderness valley in Haleakalā National Park. Accessing Paliku requires determination, as it can only be reached via a strenuous hike of 9.3 miles (15 km) along the Keoneheʻeheʻe Trail or 10.4 miles (17 km) via the Halemauʻu Trail.

Each single campsite allows a maximum of five people and two tents, ensuring an intimate atmosphere surrounded by nature.

Reservations & Fees

Camping at Paliku requires an online reservation through Recreation.gov, with costs set at $20 per night. Note that there is a maximum stay of three consecutive nights per visit, and a limit of three nights across all park areas within a 30-day period. This fee covers online service costs and is non-refundable.

To enhance visitors’ experiences, the reservation system allows guests to view specific site information and photographs, empowering them to select their preferred site beforehand.

Hikers should prepare adequately for the wilderness environment, as conditions can be unpredictable. Here are some essential tips:

Weather Awareness: Expect temperatures to vary from 40 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit during the day and can drop to 30 degrees at night.
Trail Conditions: The terrain may include steep paths with loose cinders; sturdy hiking shoes are highly recommended.
Pack Essentials: Always carry a first aid kit, enough water (3-4 liters per person/day), food supplies, rain gear, and extra bedding.
Leave No Trace: Campers must pack out everything they bring in; burying trash is not permitted.
