Nestled in the heart of Idaho, Wilderness Gateway Campground is an ideal destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Located in Kooskia, Idaho, this campground is surrounded by the breathtaking landscapes of the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests and offers direct access to the Wild and Scenic Lochsa River. The idyllic setting, complete with towering trees and rugged mountain terrain, makes it a perfect spot to relax and recharge while enjoying nature’s wonders.
Available Campsites
The campground features a wide variety of campsites:
- Single-family campsites
- A large-group campsite that accommodates up to 208 people and 52 vehicles
- Equestian sites in Loop D
All campsites are equipped with tables and campfire rings with grills. Accessible vault toilets, flush toilets, and drinking water are conveniently available throughout the premises. Please note that firewood is not provided and should be sourced locally. Some sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Natural Features
The campground is set at an elevation of 2,100 feet, within a heavily wooded forest landscape that is home to a diverse array of wildlife including elk, deer, moose, bear, and mountain goats. Additionally, the nearby Boulder Creek cascades through the campground, adding to the tranquil atmosphere of the area. The campground is also a stone’s throw away from the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness, providing excellent opportunities for nature hikes and exploration.
Recreation Opportunities
Wilderness Gateway is a hub for outdoor activities such as:
- Whitewater rafting on the Lochsa River, renowned for its continuous rapids
- Fishing for cutthroat and rainbow trout, as well as chinook salmon and steelhead
- Hiking on numerous scenic trails, including:
- 15-mile Lochsa Peak Trail
- 27-mile Boulder Creek Trail
- 1-mile birding trail that loops around the campground
- Half-mile Downriver Trail leading to a river overlook
- Horseback riding on designated wilderness trails
Group Camping and Amenities
The campsite offers an accessible group shelter, which can accommodate up to 200 people. If reserved, visitors will receive a combination code for the utility room, which includes a converter plug for personal generators. The pavilion is equipped with multiple tables and a cozy stone fireplace. Accessible flush toilets and a parking area are conveniently located adjacent to the pavilion.
Need to Know
Before you visit, please be aware of the following:
- A fee of $2 per day is charged for extra vehicles.
- Reservations for the group campsite require a minimum of 32 people.
- Cell phone service is limited; the nearest town with reception is Kooskia, located 49 miles away.

Wilderness Gateway Campground also serves as an excellent base for exploring local attractions, such as:
- Lochsa Historical Ranger Station – a living history visitor center just a mile away.
- The National Historic Lolo Trail Corridor, accessible within an hour’s drive.
Driving Directions
From Lowell, take Highway 12 east for approximately 25 miles to reach the campground.
